BW Project Week 29

ISO 400 | 50mm | f 4.0 | 1/15 sec
I'm just having too much fun with these "mini" shots.  I'm not sure now if this is a black-and-white project or a miniature-self-portrait project.

Anyways, had this fun idea of skating on top of my 70-200mm f2.8 (a bad idea when looking at it from a practical standpoint).  I think that the glass on the end of the lens would make a perfect ice-skating rink (true, you'd probably get sick of going in circles after the first five laps, but it would still be pretty epic).

Shot the lens by itself on a table using natural window light and used a white umbrella to reflect some of the natural light onto the glass itself to get that shine across its surface.  I then photographed myself attempting to assume a skaterly pose (I'm pretty sure that's a real term in the modeling world) in front of a window in an effort to replicate the kind of light I had on the lens.  Posing like a skater can prove challenging, especially when you're doing it on the carpet in your tennis shoes.  I then photographed real skates separately (I would have photographed myself in the skates except for the fact that my feet are too big to fit in them).  Then I jumped into Photoshop, composited all the elements together and came up with this.

Those are the technical details for all you artists that are interested in that kind of stuff.  Regardless of all the ins-and-outs of lighting, photography, and compositing involved in this image, I think it's a pretty cool picture.  And I also think that when I finish this 52-week project, I'm going to have to start another one dedicated to miniature self-portraits.  We'll have to see (after all, I've still got a ways to go with this project), but I think it would be cool.
